Vintage Photos of Local Signs

Since before 1980, our company founder Bruce Nunn has been creating beautiful and impactful signs all across the Saanich Peninsula. One of his earliest contracts involved hand-painted paper price posters for Fairfield Thrifty Foods. Can you recall those bold, eye-catching posters showcasing amazing deals like ‘Reg. Hamburger .69 cents a pound!’? In an era when computer graphics were still in their infancy, Bruce dedicatedly hand-lettered every sign and graphic. Take a stroll through the images below to catch a glimpse of Bruce at work, showcasing just a fraction of the countless signs he has produced over the years, along with a few nostalgic snapshots of Sidney from the past.
Among these snapshots, you’ll find a rare photo of Sidney’s only neon sign – the iconic Star Weekly sign that once adorned what is now Tanners Books. See how many of these old images you remember!
